Summary

The Kansas City VA Medical Center is recruiting for Nursing Acute Care Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN). The Float Pool (RN) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. The nurse will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation.

Duties

The Float Pool RN provides competent, evidence-based nursing care across multiple care settings, offering variety and flexibility in every shift. KCVA Float Pool RNs rotate across multiple units which include:

  • Emergency Department – 19-bed unit Four Med-Surg/Telemetry units – typically a 4:1 patient ratio Inpatient Mental Health DOM-SUD – 21-day outpatient alcohol and substance abuse rehab program ICUs – Float Pool RNs care for med-surg/tele overflow patients only if floated to ICU.
  • Assignments shift between units based on census, acuity, and staffing needs, with extended placements possible to support long-term staffing.
  • Key responsibilities include: Providing direct and indirect patient care across multiple care settings Supervising LPNs and Nursing Assistants as appropriate Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes Supporting quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice Serving as a patient advocate and resources for staff, patients, and caregivers Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical judgment, leadership, and the ability to quickly adapt to diverse patient populations across the lifespan.
  • This position requires physical stamina, flexibility in scheduling, and a commitment to delivering exceptional care aligned with VA’s I CARE values.
  • The major duties and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse (Nursing Excellence) include but are not limited to: Leads the provision of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process in alignment with the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
  • Applies clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes within the immediate practice setting.
  • Improves Veteran/patient driven care by resolving experience issues such as coordination of care, timeliness or process issues, common themes of dissatisfaction, or environment of care concerns for the immediate practice setting.
  • Serves as an advocate for patients, families, and caregivers, improving outcomes for the immediate practice setting.
  • Demonstrates the ability to improve the effectiveness of communications and interactions with others, to inspire their cooperation and confidence to ensure safe and effective outcomes in the current practice setting.

  • Preferred Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of acute care RN experience across multiple settings, including ER, demonstrating adaptability and clinical versatility.
