Nurse- Geriatrics and Extended Care Chief Nurse

Summary

The Geriatrics and Extended Care Chief Nurse assigned to CTVHCS with a primary duty station in Temple, executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross services and/or discipline lines and, influence the organizational healthcare mission.

Duties

• CTVHCS is in the process of making a cultural change, shifting from a disease-focused approach to a health and wellbeing approach, in order to implement the Whole Health System of Care.
• This is a VA-wide initiative to provide a comprehensive and systematic approach to improve healthcare delivery at all stages of Veteran care.
• This entails moving from an episodic, "siloed" approach to an interdisciplinary, holistic approach, emphasizing self-care in the larger context of well-being.
• All staff in this facility will be part of this process, shifting the focus from the question, "What's the matter with you?" to the question, "What matters to you, and how can we help you live your best
• Life?" This strategy also involves integrating a full range of conventional approaches with
• Health (CIH) approaches in order to optimize lifelong health and well-being, as defined by the
• Veteran, rather than narrowly focusing on disease management.
• The Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) Chief Nurse (CN) functions as an advisor, administrator, educator, consultant, and mentor who possesses a wide range of experience and leadership ability.
• The CN GEC provides senior leadership and oversight for daily clinical and administrative operations within nursing as directed by the Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS).
• Responsible for ensuring the delivery of nursing care to Veteran patients and managing nursing personnel within GEC programs to include the Community Living Center (CLC).
• Collaborates with and provides leadership in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive rehabilitation and CLC programs.
• Responsible for efficient and effective management of resources within GEC.
• Responsible for assessing and recommending the allocations of human and material resources, in determining staffing levels, managing overtime, and recruitment and retention of nursing staff.
• Possesses solid knowledge of Nursing regulations, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) guidelines, medical review criteria, clinical practice and documentation requirements, current standards of care, and compliance guidelines.
• The CN GEC supports the integration and collaboration of nursing with other professional disciplines and functional areas in the mutual achievement of patient-centered and organizational goals.
• They champion a High Reliability Organization (HRO) with a lifestyle of safety founded on a systems approach to developing evidence-based health care solutions based on prevention, not punishment, with collective mindfulness.
• Fosters a climate for practice that enhances job satisfaction through mutual responsibility for productivity and quality improvement.
• The CN GEC collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, including other program and service leaders at the facility and network.
• They work closely to establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of Veteran Affairs (VA) staff nationwide.
• Collaborates to develop goals and objectives that support the strategic plan, meet the needs of the Veteran, and result in positive clinical and administrative outcomes.
• The CN GEC relates effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels.
• They assist the ADPCS with healthcare operations and the functions and activities expected of them.
• The ACN GEC contributes ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, and objectives for the enhancement of nursing.
• Ensures the GEC program follows statutory law, accrediting organizations, and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) regulations, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

Education

Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) or Doctoral degree in nursing must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission On Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
