Exciting Opportunity Come Join Our Team! The Salem Veterans Medical Center is seeking a Medical Technician in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS). The work requires a practical knowledge of the techniques of medical laboratory practice and the reports of findings of tests and examinations may be used by physicians in diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients.

Duties

  • The Medical Technician performs nonprofessional technical work in one or more areas of the Clinical Laboratory, such as phlebotomy, accessioning and processing, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology.
  • Performs direct patient care duties in the laboratory and in other areas of the hospital which may include, but not limited to directing, instructing, and assisting patients with specimen collection and processing.Duties listed below but not limited to:
  • Assigns priority to test requests such as STATS, LTEs (life threatening emergencies), timed tests or routine collections.
  • Performs a variety of tests which are difficult and complex.
  • Analyzes and problem solves erroneous lab results and makes appropriate clinical decisions based on these results (e.g. contacts provider, recollection of specimen), performs routine maintenance on the analyzer, and monitors the quality control as required by CAP and other accrediting bodies.
  • Ensures accurate patient and specimen identifiers such as patient name, patient armband, SSN, DOB, computer request slip, and address.
  • Provides training and guidance in phlebotomy techniques to externs, students, nursing staff, medical technologists and/or new phlebotomy employees rotating through the blood collection area.
