Summary

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a MACHINIST (Title 32), Position Description Number D1213000 and is part of the AR ARNG MARKMANSHIP TNG CTR, National Guard. NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQURED- If you are not currently a member of any military service (Branch/Status), please provide a letter stating intent to join. Indefinite position not to exceed 23 months, may convert to Permanent position.

Duties

  • (1) Fabricates complex and non-routine items that require numerous intricate steps, precise measurements, unusual and compound angles, or nonstandard applications of standard equipment.
  • Performs machining work to manufacture castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications.
  • May develop and manufacture specialized tools to manufacture new parts, work rare metals or special alloys, or achieve special finishes.
  • (2) Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or specifications.
  • Lays out work by measuring and marking straight lines, arcs, circles, angles, and location points for setting up work pieces for drilling, tapping, turning, milling, boring, reaming, shaping, grinding, honing, and lapping.
  • Frequently interprets or completes dimensions, tolerances, or specifications that are incomplete or incorrect.
  • This may involve partial changes or complete redesign of items to achieve desired results.
  • Uses a variety of measuring and marking tools, including rules, vernier calipers, micrometers (inside, outside, and depth), dial indicators, surface gauges height gauges, squares, protractors, dividers, and scribes.
  • (3) Performs machine setups using advanced shop mathematics, and geometric and trigonometric formulas, to compute compound angles, angular indexing, hole patterns, pitch lead, and pitch diameters for various standard and non-standard threads.
  • Determines procedures, tools, machines, equipment, and attachments to use.
  • Occasionally performs machine work that requires new or untried procedures.
  • Performs special setups and improvises conventional machines to perform special machining operations.
  • This requires special knowledges of tooling, types of coolants, machine feeds, and speeds for special operations.
  • (4) Sets up and operates most types of conventional and/or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools such as lathes; vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plane, or universal milling machines; shapers and planers; internal and external grinders, thread grinders; and radial drills.
  • Grinds and sharpens tools, selects tools, jigs, and fixtures required to achieve specific dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
  • Sets up work in vises and between centers, uses chucks, standard faceplates, angle plate mountings, and collets.
  • Uses mandrel and various other machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, dividing heads, taper attachments, magnetic checks, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, and rotary tables.
  • Adjusts and sets speeds and feeds of machinery and determines coolants, lubricants, and abrasives to be used, taking into consideration the characteristics of both the machinery and the materials to be worked.
  • Operates machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone, and lap items.
  • Maintains dimensional accuracy during machining processes frequently, machining to tolerances that are difficult to attain or hold.
  • (5) Performs precision handwork to finish, fit, and assemble machined parts.
  • Uses various bench-mounted and hand-held powered and non-powered tools such as files, drills, reamers, and buffers.
  • Performs heat-treating, welding, and soldering.
  • (6) Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. If you are not sure you are eligible for military membership, please contact a National Guard recruiter prior to applying for this position. Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state’s National Guard.

Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership in the military grade listed below. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Military Grades: Enlisted/Officer Minimum Grade – E-6/ SSG Maximum Grade – W02/ CW2 Compatible Military Assignments: Selectee must be a member of the Arkansas Army National Guard. IMPORTANT NOTES (AS APPLICABLE): Upon selection for this position, individual must possess or initiate a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.

A favorable determination based upon investigative results is mandatory for this position. Failure to meet these requirements will result in termination of employment. A pre-placement physical is required if not already current. Upon selection, must complete mandatory Full-Time Support (FTS) Training at the Professional Education Center (PEC) within six months of assignment (if applicable, training will be coordinated by the supervisor).

Individual must meet all military requirements of the position without creating a grade inversion, as determined by the Human Resources Office (HRO). Technicians will not be militarily senior to their full-time supervisor or wage leader (Grade Inversion). Enlisted members currently at a higher grade than allowed by the position (see Military Grade Requirement above) may apply; however, they must administratively reduce prior to appointment and provide confirmation of the reduction to HRO. How You Will Be Evaluated

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the above general and specialized experience, to include following competencies- knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of machining operations to set up and operate conventional and/or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools. Knowledge of the trade to plan sequences of operations that involve innovations in setups, attachments, techniques, and tooling is required. Thorough knowledge of all aspects of machining operations as well as extensive knowledge of related trades in order to resolve problems concerning complex machining operations or procedures and to suggest more efficient or economic machining processes where necessary. Skill and ingenuity in using machine tools and their attachments to perform machining processes requiring special adaptations of equipment or processes for which they were not specifically designed.

Skill in performing work assignments that require accomplishing untried tasks or procedures such as those required in machining rare metals, new metal alloys, or other new materials. Knowledge of the effect and relationship of heat-treating, welding, soldering and other related work processes on various machining operations to complete assignment. Thorough knowledge of advanced shop mathematics, with skill in using geometric and trigonometric formulas to compute compound angles, angular indexing, hole patterns, pitch lead, and pitch diameters for various standard and non-standard threads. Knowledge of a wide range of manual welding processes involving oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen, and other industrial gases, as well as applying knowledge of various manual arc-welding processes.
