Summary

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a member of the interdisciplinary critical care team providing inpatient services. Incumbent is responsible for providing intensive care services independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges, including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Incumbent also practices within the General Surgery Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality and timeliness.

Duties

  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit APN role will include:
  • Providing direct care for patients, including order writing, documentation, admitting, and discharging patients and performing indicated procedures. Assisting with administrative tasks that improve overall team functioning. Organizing and directing daily work rounds. Ensuring
  • ICU checklist elements and plans of the day are addressed in daily rounds. Providing patient cross-coverage to facilitate
  • Housestaff attendance of educational conferences. Serving as clinical preceptors for
  • APN trainees and students, in affiliation with area universities (e.g. University of Washington School of Nursing). General Surgery
  • APN role will include: Independently managing a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice.
  • Developing and implementing an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management.
  • Demonstrating leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ordering and interpreting labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
  • Prescribing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
  • Initiating referrals and consults to specialty services.
  • Providing education to patients and their families.
  • Assessing and adjusting the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
