Summary

This position has an integral role within the pharmacy department with primary responsibilities pertaining to the management and application of the electronic health record, automated information systems, report generation and data integration. Due to the unique needs of this position, the incumbent must be knowledgeable and versatile with a multitude of computer applications, such as SharePoint, ProClarity, Microsoft Business Intelligence etc.

Duties

  • Informatics Management and Technical Support: (1) Incumbent is responsible for the evaluation, enhancement, implementation, and maintenance of current and future versions of pharmacy computer systems to improve pharmacy operations, clinical programs, related CPRS functions, and any other systems that affect the pharmacy's role in delivering services to the veteran patient.
  • Examples of these duties include implementing new versions and capabilities of CPRS, new order checking software, creating quick orders menus, templates for CPRS and other packages, and attending national meetings related to informatics.
  • In addition, projects may include data mining both locally and at the regional and national level for clinical research purposes.
  • The incumbent may also conduct education sessions on pharmacy informatics for pharmacy students and residents.
  • (2) Incumbent is responsible for maintaining current and future versions of pharmacy computer systems to ensure compliance with required standards and meeting mandated implementation deadlines.
  • When conflicting policies or problems arise, incumbent consults with the Chief of Pharmacy to resolve and/or suggest alternatives.
  • Systems that the Pharmacy Informatics/ADPAC Program Manager is responsible for, but not limited to, are listed below: The Federal EHR (Oracle) VISTA pharmacy applications CPRS pharmacy options BCMA pharmacy support ScriptPro outpatient dispensing system Parata inpatient dispensing system Audio care refill/renewal call-in system Interface support from VISTA to the ScriptPro, Pyxis systems, other (3) The Pharmacy Informatics/ADPAC Program Manager is the primary consultant on BCMA issues for Pharmacy Service.
  • These duties include attending the Clinical Bar Code Management Committee meetings, participating in tracers examining BCMA utilization by nursing staff, acting as a resource to nursing and pharmacy staff when BCMA problems arise, setting up training account orders, and adding bar codes to the local drug file for new products.
  • Incumbent is also frequently called upon to create Fileman reports to support initiatives by the BCMA Coordinator and the pharmacy management team to study and improve the BCMA system of drug administration and documentation.
  • (4) Incumbent responds in a proactive, timely manner for requests and responses for assistance related to pharmacy applications, reports, software issues, accounts, etc., within the department as presented by administrative personnel.
  • Reports presented are in a user-friendly format that meets the needs of the requestor.
  • (5) The incumbent either supervises or personally completes assignments which comprise of the pharmacy's internal management information systems monthly and quarterly and is responsible for all problems encountered with the spreadsheets and all enhancements which are requested by the management team.
  • (6) Incumbent accomplishes special projects and provides accurate data management reports, as assigned, on a timely basis.
  • Incumbent utilizes VISTA, SQL, or Pyramid Analytics along with personal computer skills providing reports in specified formats.
  • Incumbent consults with Chief of Pharmacy, identifying problems and making recommendations for change.
  • (7) The incumbent will actively participate in testing out new software (alpha and beta testing) when requested.
  • Incumbent will provide suggestions for enhancements to existing programs and future programs.
  • Incumbent will report errors in application software to appropriate source.
  • (8) Effectively utilizes standard office applications and creative skills or specialized experience to transform data into meaningful information as required by administrative, professional, and technical staff and other stakeholders.
  • (9) As part of the program and management support, the incumbent will also be actively involved and participate in formulary conversions, cost-savings initiatives and other projects as assigned by the Chief of Pharmacy.

Requirements
