Summary

This Training Instructor position is in Environmental Management services at the VA Medical Center, located at the Edward P. Boland VAMC Leeds, MA location.

Duties

The incumbent serves as a Training Instructor providing on-going training service and instruction for EMS’s Training Program. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops and maintains training materials and curricula for multiple EMS courses to be presented to EMS staff.
  • Makes recommendations for changes that involve substantive rather than procedural matters and obtains and adapts current instructional material.
  • Evaluates training courses for EMS’s training programs and works closely with senior specialists to evaluate courses to enhance EMS’s overall training program.
  • Conducts training studies and analyses in EMS’s functional specialties or subject matter areas.
  • Coordinates EMS training activities related to assignments and projects to develop and implement training courses or course materials.
  • Maintains liaison with training program instructors and training specialists to obtain information for projects and activities.
  • Collaborates in healthcare committees and professional studies to advance hospital and VISN strategic plan initiatives.
  • Consults with external subject matter experts to analyze unusual situations and develops process improvement solutions.
  • Develops comprehensive training courses and modalities on all aspects of healthcare environmental services.
  • Maintains an updated library of training materials, educational curricula, and the Environmental Care procedure manual.
  • Actively involved in evaluating regulatory and accreditation standards and designing educational initiatives to support compliance efforts.
  • Develops partnerships with stakeholders and community partners to increase program effectiveness and availability.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational programs and consistently revises and updates content, instructional materials, and delivery methods to enhance learning.
  • Mentors staff on professional and career development.
  • Designs methods for evaluation of learning activities and analyzes data to make changes to educational activities.
  • Validates overall training effectiveness and quality assurance.
  • Completes Environmental Management quality assurance studies to monitor employee competency and monitors completed and deficient training and educational comprehension reviews.
  • Conducts literature-based research on emerging pathogens, technology, theories, infection control policies, and best practices.
  • Serves as technical advisor/instructor for applying intensive practical knowledge of sanitation and disinfection application within health care environment.
  • Provides instruction covering a wide variety of topics in well-established areas of hospital housekeeping and other EMS-related subject-matter fields.
  • Makes necessary modifications to training courses for well-established programs.
  • Trains employees within EMS, and provides instruction, and modifies course content with an emphasis on biological cleanliness and infection control.
  • Provides curriculum instruction and simulation laboratory training for EMS staff.
  • Develops the training schedule plan for each fiscal year.
  • Participates in the implementation of hospital and clinic-wide training programs.
  • Participates on committees relative to sanitation and waste management operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level (GS-09) without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
  • Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

  • Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System.
  • Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment.
